Best Pirates of the Caribbean Characters
Captain Jack Sparrow
The iconic protagonist of all five movies is Jack Sparrow, constantly reminding people that he is indeed a captain. Johnny Depp’s character practically is Pirates of the Caribbean and the leading force that drives the narratives. He captains the legendary ship The Black Pearl and is famous for his quips, costume, funny walk, and the love of rum. The character was somewhat inspired by the real pirate Calico Jack Rackham.
Geoffrey Rush’s legendary character starts out as the villain in the first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, where he is an immortal skeletal being when he is not in the sunlight. When the curse is lifted at the end of the movie, starting from the second movie, he becomes a close ally of Jack and the rest of the gang. He has a trusty pet monkey, Jack, and has captained the Black Pearl and The Flying Dutchman. Barbossa was partly inspired by the pirate Benjamin Hornigold.
Master Gibbs is the trusty sidekick of Jack Sparrow, and the quartermaster of his ships, most notably The Black Pearl. He is played by Kevin McNally and appears in all five films. Gibbs is a pleasant and funny character, often on the receiving end of Jack’s jokes and insults. Still, he is devoted to his crew and captain and is one of the most memorable and beloved heroes of these adventures.
The antagonist of the second and third movies, Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, Davy Jones is a cursed pirate and the captain of The Flying Dutchman. His crew and ship are the most feared on all Seven Seas, and he is the master of the Kraken, a giant mythological being that resembles an octopus. He uses it to sink ships. Davy Jones has been cursed because he broke a promise to his love, and can only step on land once every ten years. He and his crew have overtime become gruesome fishlike beings because of the curse.
Orlando Bloom’s character is the second main protagonists of the first three movies. He is a blacksmith’s apprentice who becomes tangled up with Jack Sparrow by accident in Port Royale, Jamaica. He is in love with Elizabeth Swan, the daughter of the governor. He is great with swords, but lacks experience. His father is Bootstrap Bill Turner, a pirate in Davy Jones’s cursed crew. He eventually becomes the captain of the Flying Dutchman.
The main female protagonist of the first three films is Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley. She starts of as a damsel in distress but eventually becomes a pirate lord. She is fierce, brave, and capable. Will turner is her soulmate, and they end up together. Many other male characters are attracted to her, including Jack, James Norrington and Sao Feng.
